This One Is About Getting You Back

Not a smaller version of you. Not a younger version of you. You. The version who wakes up with a little more strength. The version who can think more clearly. The version who feels present in her own life again.

When your world falls apart, your body is often one of the first things to feel it. You stop sleeping well. You stop eating the way you normally would. You sit longer. You move less. That makes sense. Sometimes getting through the day is taking everything you have.

But your body and your mind were never two separate things. When one begins to struggle, the other feels it too. And sometimes, one of the first ways we begin finding our way back is simply by moving.

This Is Not About Getting Smaller

Movement is not punishment for what you ate. It is not something you do because your body has failed you. And it is not only about losing weight, fitting into a certain size, or trying to look the way you did twenty years ago.

This is about taking care of the body that is carrying you through the life you are rebuilding.

As we get older, movement becomes even more important. We are not just exercising for today. We are protecting our strength, our balance, our mobility, our independence, and our ability to keep participating in the lives we have prayed for.

We move so we can keep getting up, keep going places, keep doing the things we love, and keep saying yes when life gives us another reason to live fully.

Just Move

Walk. Hike. Stretch. Work in the garden. Put on some music and dance around your kitchen. Run, if running is your thing. Ride a bike. Walk through the grocery store one more time before you check out.

You do not have to begin with a complicated program, expensive equipment, or a list of numbers that makes you feel defeated before you even start. Walk to the mailbox. Walk around the block. Step outside for five minutes and come back in. Stand up and stretch while the coffee is brewing.

Do not dismiss a small beginning just because it is small. Five minutes of movement is not “nothing.” It is five minutes more than you did before. That is a real start.

What Movement Can Give You Back

Movement can help clear some of the fog. It can give you a little more energy when energy feels like the very thing you do not have. It can support better sleep, strengthen your body, lift your mood, and remind you that you are still capable of doing something good for yourself.

But there is something else it gives you, something we do not talk about nearly enough. A win.

Maybe it is a small win, but it is real. On a day when nothing else went the way you hoped, you got up and walked. You stretched. You made it to the end of the driveway. You chose not to abandon yourself.

And sometimes that one small victory is enough to remind you that you are not as stuck as you feel.

One Step, and Then Another

You have heard me say that rebuilding a life happens one step at a time. Here, I mean it literally.

Nobody goes from the couch to the mountaintop in one leap. You get up. You take one step, and then another. You walk to the mailbox today. Maybe you walk a little farther next week. You keep showing up, not perfectly, not quickly, but faithfully.

And one day, you look back and realize you are stronger than you were. You can go farther than you could before. The thing that once felt impossible has quietly become part of your life.

That is how strength returns. Not usually in one dramatic moment. It comes back through small decisions made over and over again.

You Are Not Walking Alone

Out there on the road, around the block, through the park, or down the trail . . . you have company.

God is not standing at the finish line with a stopwatch, waiting to see whether you performed well enough. He is walking with you at whatever pace you have today. On the morning you make it around the block, He is there. On the morning you put on your shoes but cannot make it past the front door, He is still there.

His love for you does not rise and fall with the number of steps you take. This is not about proving yourself to Him. It is about caring for something He entrusted to you.

Your body already knows how to respond to care. Muscles can grow stronger. Endurance can return. Balance can improve. Your head may begin to clear. Sleep may come a little easier. Strength can show up again after you were certain it was gone for good.

And every time you move, you are participating in the rebuilding. You are not punishing your body or fighting against it. You are working with it, caring for it, and giving it another chance to carry you forward.

Your Dreams Need You

You still have places to go, people to love, work to do, prayers to see answered, and dreams to make happen.

Your dreams need a body that can carry you to them.

So take care of the one you have. Move it gently. Strengthen it patiently. Speak to it kindly. Do not wait until you can do everything before you do something.

Take one step today. And then, when tomorrow comes, take another.

Now for the Honest Part

I am not a fitness instructor. I don't have a single certification.

Everything shared on this page comes from my own experience and from what has helped me keep moving, growing stronger, and finding my way forward.

Before you start any fitness or diet program, please talk with your doctor. You know your body and your history. I do not.

But I do know this: You do not have to do it all today. You just have to stop believing that it is too late to begin.
